"Welcome to the Full Circle Project, the all-new Customer Driven Charitable Giving project by Waste Industries!

Before we get into the details on how this campaign works, we want to take a brief moment to say how thankful we are for your participation. This project is designed to more appropriately direct how Waste Industries handles its annual charitable giving.

We take special pride in helping out the communities we service, a commitment that extends from the services we provide to the many charities we give back to each and every year. Now, however, we are doing things with a bit of a twist.

From now on, you get to decide how we donate our charitable funds. It won’t cost you a penny extra to participate, as this service is funded 100% by Waste Industries. The twist is that we don’t get to decide how the money is spent anymore, you do!

We have broken down our charitable giving into five categories. Those categories include:

Animal Rescue – Includes charities such as the Humane Society"

Other worthy causes were listed here as well. It goes on to read:

"Once you select a category, your iCAN account will be updated with a badge displaying your decision to push Waste Industries donations to the charities within your category. Within 2-4 weeks, you’ll receive an envelope from Waste Industries containing further information on your category and a sticker/decal to attach to your Waste Industries container, showing your neighbors that you have helped direct funds that benefit the charity of your choosing. The more people that donate to your category, the more funds your category could potentially receive."

So, if you are a waste industries customer, please consider making the choice of Animal Rescue like the Lovely and Awesome Shane and I did! Waste Industries customers should be getting an email like this soon.

More dog supplies on a budget

The Lovely Shane and I recently attended a local Yard Sale. One of the items that I picked up is the red travel bowl that is setting on my work table in the office of the Dog Trainer Shack. This bowl is brand new, never used. It came with the tag attached that is setting to the right of the bowl. I paid the modest sum of $1.00 for this bowl. I could have probably negotiated a lower price but it seemed fair to me.

I am telling you about our yard sale trip because if you visit a few yard sales, you can find some really good bargains on dog supplies. Of course you will visit a lot of sales in which you find no bargains and perhaps not dog supplies at all, believe it or not, some people do not have dog packs at their homes ( I know this is a shock to some of you, as this particular concept was to me, but it does happen :) )

Just for fun, I looked up this travel bowl on the manufacturers web site. Apparently the red one is no longer available but they have one in slightly different color that you can order for $12.99. So, The Lovely Shane and I saved $11.99.

I wrote this to encourage you to always look for bargains like the one I describe here. I am going to use this bowl to more easily provide traveling water for my little buddies. However, if you come across a bargain like this and you can not use the item, I strongly suggest and encourage you to purchase it an donate it to one of our local heroes of dog rescue. I am sure they would love to any supplies you can provide for their foster dogs!

At this point, I normally tell you to contact me for your dog training needs then I close the post.  Please do, as always contact me regarding your dog training needs or any questions/concerns you may have. However, I want to mention something personal here.

The Lovely Shane and I attended a funeral today. My Fathers sister, Alice Ruth Brown recently died. She had been battling various illnesses for sometime and died as a result of a recent bought of pneumonia from which she was ultimately too weak to recover.

I mention my Aunt Ruth here because she was a real dog person. She loved toy breeds and miniatures. As a child I remember many times visiting with her in her living room  while a chihuahua or a miniature dachshund sat in her lap getting petted.

I got my first exposure to toy breeds and miniatures from this wonderful lady. She once gave us (my brother, me and my parents) a miniature dachshund girl named Baby. I have very fond memories of Baby and of my Aunt Ruth. The world needs more people like her! I already miss her. But, her suffering is over and she is in a far,far better place with our Lord!

Have a great weekend!

Till next time

Running Jogging with Your Dog

Get out there with your dog! We all know that dogs need exercise, but most people underestimate the amount of exercise many dogs need and underestimate the value in a well-exercised dog. A vast majority of behavior issues stem from a lack of exercise and while there are many ways to exercise your dog, for this discussion, we will focus on running/jogging with your dog.

As a runner myself, I know how hard it is to find the time and the motivation to run on some days…the last thing you need is for an inexperienced, wild dog along to ruin your run once you are out there. But, look at the big picture. Usually after just a few “training runs,” your dog will understand what your expectations are and can transform into a great running partner. And just think of the time you’ll save by killing two birds with one stone, so to speak. You won’t have to take the time to walk your dog in addition to running by yourself. So, here are some quick tips...

Be Selfish! Take on the attitude that this is your run and it’s a privilege for your dog to come with you. So many of us get hung up on the fact that the dog wants to stop and sniff or pee on everything. Well, my answer to that is, too bad. Give your dog an opportunity to relieve himself at the beginning of the run and then again at the end, or middle. Other than that, the dog is only stopping because you are allowing him to.

Position Decide what side of you your dog will run on and stick with it. It’s not only a hassle to have to switch the leash around every time your dog changes sides, but it’s dangerous as well.

No Socializing Your dog may want to stop and say hi to every dog he sees, but he’ll figure out real quick that when you are running, he is not socializing. Just keep going as you pass other dogs. Often times it helps to cross the street to make the passing a little easier.

Appropriate collars/harness You may decide to use something that gives you more control than you need for a regular walk with your dog. I have found that the gentle leaders, although take a while for the dog to get used to, provide the absolute most control when jogging with your dog. They do need to be fit properly.

The bottom line is this. You and your dog need exercise…doesn’t it make sense to do it together??? So, take the time to work with your dog on becoming a great running partner. I promise, you will notice an overall improvement in his behavior and it will be well worth it! Check out "Fidos Forum" at http://www.unleashdogtraining.com/ to get more tips on running with your dog and to add some of your own experiences.

Dog Fences and Other Containment Devices

When the weather is nice outside, it is tempting to let the dogs run. Actually, it is a really good idea to let them get off-leash exercise if you have the proper place to for this sort of activity. Our pack loves to be outside in the sun!

The Lovely Shane and I have a backyard that is enclosed with a 4 foot high chain link fence here at the Dog Trainer Shack. This is certainly not in any way an adequate containment system for an unsupervised Beagle. However, it is adequate for supervised romps. Copper just loves to track and chase chipmunks, squirrels feral cats, grizzly bears and whatever other interesting critters make their way inside the fence. Well perhaps I exaggerated the grizzly bear thing :).

I mentioned that this 4 foot chain link fence is not an adequate containment system for a Beagle that is unsupervised. Many of you new Beagle buddies or those of you who have never had a Beagle buddy in your pack may think that I am overly cautious here. I have been around Beagles most of my life. One should never, ever, ever, ever underestimate a Beagles ability or determination to escape. It is not that your little guy or girl is not happy living with you, it is that the Beagle has a very strong instinctual drive to track game. If he/she is on the trail of something the focus of the little brain is very narrow. All he/she is thinking about is following the trail. This is one thing that makes them wonderful hunting dogs. A Beagle with its relatively short legs can follow a trail with its nose to the ground without slowing down to sniff.

I went into the house for just a couple of minutes the other day and one of our pack (not sure which member, I am not convinced that it was not a group effort) was on the trail of something and began digging under the fence. I have temporarily filled the hole with brick and concrete block until I can make a more permanent repair. Under is not the only way a Beagle will try to escape either. I once had a very smart guy named Boomer. When he was about 4 years old, he once climbed over a 6 foot chain link fence! He looked a lot like the guy in the picture here scaling the privacy fence. If you need to leave your dog unattended outside for short periods of time (please do not do this for extended periods) there are some options. You can build or buy a kennel type chain link enclosure. some of these have tops that will keep out rain and sun.

If you anchor these enclosures to a concrete slab the dogs will be unable to dig out.

The Lovely Shane and I are planning to, one day, install a 6 foot privacy fence on at least one side of the back yard. Perhaps we will install one or two of these cool portholes. This will allow out pack to look out. Besides, I think it looks really cool :).

Okay, now I am going to mention something that is a little controversial.  The devices that utilize shock collars to make a so called "underground" or" invisible fence". What I am about to write is my opinion as an electronic engineer and a dog trainer. To call these devices "fences" fosters a false sense of safety and security and, in my opinion, borders on fraudulent. These devices sometimes use a buried wire and sometimes use RF (Radio Frequency) transmissions. When the dog gets near the "border" he receives what is sometimes called a static correction. I have studied electronics for many years. It was a career for me. I am now an FCC Licensed Amateur Radio Operator and it is also a hobby of mine. Please, let us not sugar coat this matter. I have never, other than from the manufacturers and advocates of these devices, heard the correction that they provide called "static". I suppose in the academic electrical sense this is technically accurate. But, my friends and readers, in a strictly scientific, electrical sense, lightning is static. Static does not, in any way, co-notate safety. What the collars that come with these devices do is administer a high voltage, low current electrical shock to the dog in the guise of "correction". To some extent it is effective. It does get the little guy or girls attention. However, do they really understand why they are being "corrected" ? I am not convinced that they understand.

A dog can and in many cases will learn that if he/she runs hard and fast enough the "border" can be crossed. He will only get a short and painful electrical shock. The really bad thing about this is if the dog tries to return he will get the shock at the border again. Also, my friends, these collars are in no way foolproof. Batteries can get weak or die. The collar can slip off. The control unit can lose electrical power making these things completely and utterly useless. The underground wire can be accidentally broken. An adjacent transmitter could possibly interfere with the signal from the wireless transmitter rendering its performance unpredictable. Many things can happen to make these devices even less effective.

I am also not at all convinced that these collars are safe. Because of the way the heart works (remember I am not a doctor, dont even play one on T.V.) electrical shocks, even non-lethal ones, can be dangerous to dogs and people.

It is very rare that I find myself in agreement with PETA. They are generally much too radical for me. However, I have to agree with most of their position on shock collars when used as a "fence" or containment device

If you use Google or the search engine of your choice, there is no shortage of images and stories of dogs who were reportedly hurt or killed by shock collars. By the way, just because a product has the word "safe" and "pet" in the name does not mean that it is absolutely safe in all respects to all pets in all applications.

Please understand I am not stating that there is no legitimate use for these devices. In some very extreme cases of aggression, these shock collars with a remote (not as a so called fence) can sometimes be effective as a last resort only. However, this should be done under the supervision of a professional ( a dog trainer, canine behaviorist, or veterinarian).

During my time working at Petco, I saw many of these shock collar devices sold. Some of them for bark control, some of them for containment, and some with the remotes were sold for "training" purposes. They were almost never sold to be used as a last resort in a difficult case. Many times people bought them expecting them to be a magic bullet for behavioral issues. Many times, at the store where I worked in Peachtree City, GA they were bought to be used as "fences" so that the people in deed restricted communities did not have to put up an "unsightly" real fence. I always explained how these devices really worked to customers. But in many cases they bought them as "quick fixes" because of the way these things are miss-marketed. These things are promoted by Petco as "training aides" look at their website there is really no explanation of exactly how these devices work and the inherent dangers of them. I guess there is a great deal of profit to be made here. I suppose that is the real focus at the place "where the pets go".

Well, as always if you have any dog training questions or concerns, please contact me. Also I do, as many of you know, operate a Handyman business. If you have any questions about proper fences or need one installed or repaired also please contact me.

Dancing with your dog a new type of freestyle obedience!

Doggie freestyle dance isnt really a new thing, but it is relatively new to the public. It developed in Canada out of freestyle heeling as an entertaining way to compete in obedience. When costumes and dance steps were added to heeling routines to music, dog dancing took on the form of a dramatic routine. Although the possibilities are endless, there are many things you can do with your dog to create a dance that is both fun, but also a great way to work on heeling and also communication. I have recently been asked to start a cha-cha with your dog class at Bosleys in New West. It will be held on Friday nights at seven until eight and begin on August 9th.

This summer I had the opportunity to attend a seminar with Dante Camacho who is an agility master and also a free style dance competitor and instructor. Here is a video on how to get started on targeting and also on how to build the foundations of the tricks you can transfer to dance routines. It is fun to train these behaviours, then link them together into a routine to music. The music is key to the performance and you need to pick a beat that suits you and your dog. You also need to consider what works in terms of the speed at which your dog can perform the behaviours.

Check out this video of Dante Camacho demonstrating the foundations of heeling and targeting!

Meet the breed Plott Hound

Today I thought I would start something new. I am going to regularly write posts about different breeds titled "Meet the Breed".

I will give you some information about my experiences with dogs of the breed or mixed with the breed and give you some of the general characteristics of the breed.

My intention here is to provide you with information regarding different breeds. Perhaps this will be helpful to some of you who are considering adopting or purchasing and new member of your pack.

Todays topic is the Plott Hound. This breed is very popular in the Carolinas. It is a scent hound that was bred for hunting mostly larger game. I understand they are used a lot to hunt wild Boar. Although I am told they make great coon hounds too.

An interesting bit of trivia: I am told that the Plott Hound is the only American Hound Breed that does not have British ancestory. It is actually German in origin. In the 1750s just before the war of northern aggression :) , a guy name Jonathan Plott decided he wanted to move from his home in Germany to the USA. The story goes that Jonathans brother came with him but, tragically, died in route.

Jonathan brought with him five Hanoverian Hounds. Jonathan settled in North Carolina. There he began breeding his dogs with some of the local dogs. It is said that Bloodhounds were one of the breeds that he mixed with his dogs. Eventually his dogs became the Plott Hounds that we know today.

You can read about the AKC standards for this breed at http://www.akc.org/breeds/plott/index.cfm .

There are a variety of markings and colors in the Plott Hound breed. I am partial to the brindle pattern of the dog in the picture.

The adult Plott Hound is generally about 22 -24 inches high and weighs about 45-55 pounds. I have seen a couple of them a little bigger than that though.

These guys are beautiful, muscular hounds. They are very energetic. They learn very quickly and generally really want to please their people.

Like a lot of hounds they are quite vocal. So, they may not be a great choice for the apartment dweller.

They are generally very affectionate to people and good with children.

The voice of the Plott Hound is oddly high pitched. It is not what you would expect from a dog of its size but it is a really cool sound (to me anyway, but I am quite partial to the sound of a hounds voice).

These guys, even as adults, are extremely energetic. They need a lot of exercise.

Because they are so energetic, it is important to socialize them at an early age and to get the obidience training. They can be taught at any age and can be very well behaved and polite little guys but you have to be consistent and work at it. The earlier you start the easier it will be.

As with a lot of the hounds, these guys do not do well off leash. They will wander off on the trail of game or something and it will be difficult to call them back.

I had a female Plott Hound Puppy named Sadie to attend my Puppy 1 and Puppy 2 classes when I worked at Petco. This was one of the most intelligent and easy to train dogs with which I have ever worked. She was energetic and at first loved to pull the leash. But by the end of the classes she was doing very well! Her desire to work and please the people was remarkable. But her people exercised her a lot! That is a requirement that I can not stress enough.

If you want a really sweet, loyal and energetic companion. The Plott Hound is certainly worth consideration.

If you have any questions about a suitable dog for your pack or if you have training needs, please contact me at any time.

The benefit of training your dog yourself is that while practicing him, you are actually developing a bonding experience with your dog. By going with the training yourself, you are also attempting to comprehend your pet dog better.

Come Fido Come!

The most important command that you can teach a dog is COME. Most dog owners teach it without much problem, but often, its a loose command that translates to come over here and pay attention to your person for a second. However, you want your dog to come to you 100 percent of the time and and give you 100 percent of its attention...not just come when you are yelling bloody murder or when there is nothing distracting it. What do you do if you have a dog (or two, like me) that is not really interested in coming when called, or only comes when there are no distractions? You cant punish the dog and expect it to want to come to you. We never want to punish our dogs for not coming, or when they FINALLY come, or it will poison the word. It makes sense then that we would only use this command in the most positive of ways. I have two dogs, who when I first got them, would not come when called and even ran away when I said the C word! For them it meant that the fun was over, or they were in trouble. So youd better run or the game was over! They had been taught that COME usually meant, its time to put the leash on and leave the park. I needed to re-define it and make coming fun and exciting for them, so that I could rely on the command. To start fresh I broke COME into three parts and worked on them individually.

These three parts or three Rs, as I like to call them are:

Recognition, Recall and Release.

Name RECOGNITION is something a single dog owner might not give much thought to, but for those of us who have multiple dogs, it is necessary to preface all commands with the dogs name. Some trainers dont encourage the use of the dogs name, but I think it is very important. The name is really the foundation of all commands. You need to get the dogs attention before you tell it what to do. To establish name recognition, I call my dogs names out separately and throw treats at them for looking at me. Looking at me, on cue, is all they have to do to get a treat! Do this three time a day, for five repetitions for a few days or a week. This might seem simple or silly to some, but for people who have dogs who dont pay attention when called, this is the first step toward bridging a recall. (Doing five times takes about five minutes, three times a day). The most important thing about name RECOGNITION is that it gets your dogs attention. You want to have, or be able to get its attention at all times. Repetition of this assures that your dog will be well practiced in looking to you for the next command. You can use it to bridge all the obedience work you will be doing in the future. It is easy and can be fun if you keep it dynamic and set up a scheduled time to practice. I keep a bowl of treats in a candy dish that I can get at easily so Im more apt to practice. If you are concerned with your pet gaining weight, cut back on its meal size appropriately.

Next is the RECALL game. The dog might already be coming to you (in anticipation of a treat) when you call its name. That is great, but at this point it needs to be happening without you saying COME! However, if the dog isnt already starting to head your way when you say its name; then simply throw it a treat for looking at you when you call it and then show it a second treat. It should start to head your way for more treats. Now give the COME command. When it reaches you, say GOOD COME making a big deal out of it...then give the dog the treat. Do this three times a day for five repetitions. You can even do it while walking on leash and combine it with the name recognition. Call the dogs name...take a step back and lure the dog with a treat. This doesnt take much time and is an easy way of strengthening the bond you have with your dog. Dont worry, eventually, you can just call the dogs name and when it looks at you, say COME and treat it when it gets to you. Right now we are concerned with establishing a fast and consistent recall. The whole point of calling the dogs name and luring it to you is to teach it that great things come from you! The reason you want to say COME when the dog is already on its way to you, is so you have a 100 percent success rate. Repetition of good behavior is what we want here. We want COME to be a 100 percent automatic knee jerk reaction. If COME has been poisoned by a bad experience, or the dog is just so used to hearing it and not responding this will re-condition the word to have a new value.

NOTE: if necessary you can change your recall word to HERE, if you think it will help things along. For many adopted dogs rescued from bad situations, it is necessary to change, not only the recall word, but also the dogs name to start fresh. I recommend changing it if there has been a history of abuse, or if the dog thinks COME means RUN!

This brings us to the final and most overlooked step, RELEASE. In order to build a good strong COME, that isnt sloppy, you want the dog to stick around and wait for further instruction. To teach the dog to wait until you say it is okay, you need a word that can be used to indicate the exercise is over. Some people use the release OKAY, but that is an overused word and comes up often in a conversation. This could pose a danger that you will say it unwittingly and the dog will take off, when you didnt intend to release it. I use BREAK for one of my dogs and FREE for the other. With two dogs, you must use the name again with the release word in order to strengthen the difference. So to teach RELEASE, you just throw a treat away from you as you say the word and let the dog get it. Eventually, you can let the dog go without a treat, with the RELEASE as the reward, but to start with, using treats is a way to mark the behavior and to create a definite marker. The importance of creating a release word is that it can be applied to anything that is considered an endurance command. You want your dog to understand that you expect it to do what you want, or ask it to do until you say otherwise. When you choose the word most comfortable for you, use it with everything. If the dog is laying down while you are having dinner, because you asked it to...say the word and throw a treat...it will let the dog know that it can get up now. If you have asked the dog to sit until you unclip its leash, then throw a treat and use the command to let it know it can move around now that you say it is okay.

The fourth R is repetition!

REPEAT-REPEAT-REPEAT!

When the dog is coming successfully and knows that it doesnt mean the fun is over, add distractions, like other dogs.

Remember to be dynamic and fun, this will make your dog want to choose you over other stimulus and make it fun for you too!

Training=Consistency over Time!

Introducing Dogs and Babies Part One

My wonderful friend, Kathy Nolasco, is getting ready to welcome her first child into the world.  Well, her first human child that is.  Kathy is also the proud parent of a beautiful German Shepherd Dog named Linda.  Which is what prompted Kathy to send me a message the other day, the gist of which was "How do we introduce our dog to the baby?"

Its a question I get a lot, at least from those who are expecting, or know someone who is.  So I thought Id share my answer with everyone.

A little background first.  Kathy and her husband Gerson have a one-year-old female German Shepherd, Linda, from the Dominican Republic (a Dominican Shepherd I tease her).  They are also expecting a baby boy in about 20 days, should he cooperate with his due date.  Kathy has made arrangements for Linda to stay with her parents while she is in the hospital after the baby is born, and they are already planning on bringing baby blankets to Linda so she can smell the baby before she meets him.

But Lindas already nervous, and the baby hasnt even been born yet.  According to Kathy, Linda is scared of the new baby things in the house, especially the stroller and the swing.  So this is where the training needs to start.  Ill tackle part one - fear of the stroller and swing - in this post, and part two - introducing Linda to the baby - in a later post.

The first rule of training Linda to accept the new baby should be "100% positive."  Because we want the relationship between dog and baby to be a positive one, the training should always be positive too.  We dont want Linda to make any associations between bad things and the new baby.

To teach Linda to accept the baby stroller and swing, get some really yummy treats (PureBites, Natural Balance Rolled Dog Food, Charlee Bears, or Wellness Wellbites).  If she is clicker trained, grab the clicker, but if not, Kathy can tell her "yes" every time she would get a click (for more on clicker training basics see Karen Pryors website, clickertraining.com. Start out with either the stroller or the baby swing (tackle one before the other - the second time around will be easier).

Lets say Kathy picks the baby swing.  Have the swing set up, but not activated.  Bring Linda into the room where the swing is, and the instant she looks at (or near) the swing, click (or say "yes!") and give her a treat.  Stand in such a way that Linda needs to look back to get her treat, away from the swing.  When she looks at the swing again, click and treat.  Repeat the exercise a couple more times, then take a big step towards the swing.  Kathy should click and treat for Linda looking at the swing, again, the instant they move towards it.  Do another 3 or 4 rounds, then move closer and closer.  Eventually they should be able to stand right next to the swing.

When Kathy is beside the swing, she should reward Linda for looking at the swing once or twice, but then hold off and see if shell voluntarily lean towards it, sniff at it or even touch her nose to it.  If she does, definitely click and treat!  Work on getting as much interaction as possible, without resorting to bribing or luring (an example of that would be putting the treat on the swing).  Be patient - it will pay off in many ways!

The first time Kathy moves Linda towards the swing the swing should be turned off, not moving at all.  Once Linda masters the exercise with the swing off, start over with the swing turned on low - bring Linda into the room and click and treat the instant she looks at the swing.  Continue progressing until there are no issues with the swing.  Then its time to move onto the stroller.

If Linda gets nervous at any point, things have gone a little too fast.  Keep things light and fun.  There dont need to be any commands, and dont force her at any point. This exercise is so effective because Linda is in control - something that goes a long way towards building confidence and eliminating fear.  By rewarding her every time she looks at the baby swing shell start to have a positive association with the swing.

Make A Great Canine An Exceptional A single With These Recommendations

You travel usually and making your puppy is simply not an alternative. For instances you need to carry your pet dog by crate, it really is very important that you teach it beforehand to save your self disappointment. This article will enter into particular techniques you can do to make your self and your canine.

When officially education your pet dog to perform distinct skills like seated or trembling practical command, assist them simply speaking slot machines of energy interspersed each day. Just as mankind can increase bored stiff or perhaps upset when becoming required to complete 1 monotonous measures following yet another, so can canines.

Bad ways of instruction your puppy dont function. Just as with mankind, optimistic reinforcement of behaviors is much more successful. Use compliments, treats and engage in time to demonstrate your pet dog that you will be pleased about their efficiency. If he cannot do what you are asking him, tend not to discipline him or yell at him. He will affiliate trying to do the project with negativity and can steer clear of the task even more difficult the next time.

Look at using the services of someone that will help you teach your puppy. The same as playing a sports activity, animal training is actually a talent which will take a chance to build. People have their own style, and it might be that how you will are getting together with the family pet is not rather functioning. Another person can help you find out how to adjust your training sessions to ensure they are a greater match for your dog.

Make your puppy training fun for both you and your wildlife. When you are not needing exciting then more than likely, your pet will not be both. This might lead to both of you having a bad encounter. The greater fun you may make your dog instruction the speedier it can go for both of you. Try out to look at dog training being a game, rather than as a laborious task.

Be generous with benefits when coaching your puppy. Usually do not be afraid of providing an excessive amount of compliments or way too many snacks. Satisfying your pet stimulates him to go on the behavior that guided up to the reward. Usually do not be scared of shelling out too much time with training your puppy. It can pay off.

Some puppies have huge stores of electricity which can cause the dog to behave ridiculous via out the day. For dogs such as this a fenced in backyard or electric collar fencing could be a great tool to enable the dog to run around within a included place. The canine can have much more physical exercise and become more relaxed as it pertains on the inside.

Using a diverse sculpt of voice for various uses is a good educating device for coaching your puppy. Your commands must be stated inside the identical tone and quantity again and again. Be company and razor-sharp with instructions. Work with a louder tone for corrections, and your organic voice for praise.

An effective puppy training idea would be to not spoil your pet dog through giving them evening meal scraps at all times. The better you spoil your pet, the more you permit awful actions for example pleading. As an alternative, make goodies element of a compensate system. Once your dog has been good, let them have a reward being a prize.

A dog proprietor who tries to teach their pet whilst upset will never be productive. Puppies are really sensitive critters, and they can sensation their owners displeasure. Fury and unhappiness by using a dogs functionality can poison an entire training curriculum. A pet dog instructor who gets furious making use of their pets performance ought to take a break and settle down before ongoing their training program.

1 suggestion to remember when coaching your dog is that it is advisable to keep your leash with virtually no slack inside it. This will be significant which means your pet does not draw up against the leash and then try to work uncontrollably when strolling it. It is important to ensure your canine knows to be on your side.

If you do not talk that biting is undesirable, a puppy doesnt know he is carrying out a problem. When you get your pup biting, redirect him to your chew toy or bone tissue. As soon as the puppy starts to nibble, firmly say "No!" and give him the chew plaything. When you are training a puppy to stop biting, tend not to perform any wrestling or tug of conflict game titles with them to bolster what you are actually training.

An essential training your dog idea is by using the pets label when trying to get its interest. You need to get your dog used to answering you when you call it by brand. Take advantage of the pets title once you supply it, carry it for strolls and play with it. Randomly get in touch with the family pet to you by name repeatedly throughout the day, then reward it for approaching when referred to as. Never ever call your pet by its label to visit you just being reprimanded.

Select goodies that happen to be higher-quality and favored by your pet for the best coaching effects. Cheddar cheese, sausages or any other generally taboo goodies can be used as a compensate for the job nicely carried out.

To summarize, it is essential your pet be unveiled in crate instruction if you plan on undertaking any vacation along with it. This will permit airline transport. When you follow the tips and tricks offered in this article, you ought to save yourself a lot headache by using a dog that is prepared for visiting.

Technical Difficulties and Brody the Havanese

The good news is that the dog training is going well.  The bad news is that the video Im trying to take of said dog training is not cooperating.  Youd think with multiple digital cameras (all with video recording capability and one with HD video), a phone (also with HD video, of course) and an actual video camera, something in my house would be able to capture the wondrous moments of my little board & train, Brody, learning to target.  But the problem, Im finding, is that these video-recording devices want to be smarter than me.  Maybe they are.  At any rate, I am now waiting for my sons camera battery to charge (no, I dont want to hear about how I am using my five-year-olds camera to make a professional training video for my company).  Once that has completed I should be good to go and can resume working on Brodys target training.

You havent met Brody yet.  He is a very sweet 5 1/2 year old Havanese who has an unfortunate habit of reacting (boldly and loudly) to other dogs when he is on a leash.  Hes a good example of how one or two incidents can dramatically impact a dog - Brody has been attacked by another dog and has now taken on the attitude of "Im gonna get you before you can get me!"

On leash reactivity is a frustrating problem for many owners.  Their dog, who might be fine when meeting other dogs in a different situation, will turn into a little furry lunatic when faced with the scary prospect of seeing something that might hurt them (strange dog) when they are trapped, unable to escape (leash).

Scared is an important part of the equation to remember.  To some owners it can be very difficult to imagine that their dog is acting out of fear.  The other dog may be posing no real threat, but reality is in the eye of the beholder.  When your dog initiates the altercation, barking and carrying on in a "Come on, you want a piece of me?!!? Bark! Bark! Growl.  Ill kick your butt!!! Bark! Bark!" fashion, how could he be afraid?  The answer, we think, is that the dog is acting in a manner that he believes will scare off the other dog, thus avoiding an actual fight.

In many cases, without realising it, we are allowing this flawed presumption to be reinforced.  Any time the other dog leaves when your dog is reacting (even if they were just heading in the other direction any way), your dog gets to think, "Hey, all that carrying on worked!  I didnt get attacked and the other dog is leaving.  I guess Ill try that next time too."

So what do you do to prevent this very embarrassing and highly stressful situation from reoccurring every time you cross paths with another dog?  I do suggest getting professional help, as this can be a potentially dangerous situation, and your dog is showing pretty clearly that all is not right with their world.  But here are a few things you can do to keep things under control until a trainer gets you working on a specific behavior modification plan.

  1. Dont add more negative to an already scary situation.  Its likely that your dog is truly afraid and isnt displaying this unruly behavior just to irk you (dogs may poop on your rug or chew up your new shoes, but they are not capable of being vindictive - that charming trait is reserved for homo sapiens).  Correcting or punishing your dog only makes things worse, even if it appears to have a positive effect in the beginning.  Leash popping, poking, "pssting" or "alpha rolling" are unacceptable responses and are more likely to get you bit than they are to solve the problem.  Just because its on TV doesnt make it true.
  2. Dont reinforce the behavior either.  Rewarding your dog, either intentionally or unintentionally gives your dog positive feedback for a reaction we dont want to continue.  Stroking him and "reassuring" him with "its okay puppy, youre alright, youre my good boy" acts as reinforcement.  In addition, the more you fuss over the situation the more likely you are to send the message to your dog that something really is wrong - look how worked up Mom is getting!
  3. Stay below your dogs threshold whenever possible.  Threshold is a complex thing, but its more or less the point at which your dog feels the need to react.  Going above your dogs threshold means hell probably start barking, growling, lunging or exhibiting other "bad" behavior.  Threshold is not a static thing - it can be influenced by distance, intensity, size, gender, direction and many other factors.  Keeping your dog below threshold may simply be a matter of crossing the street when you see another dog approaching or walking your dog at a time of day that isnt as busy.
  4. Turn and walk the other way.  Remember the part about your dog thinking that his behavior chased the other dog away?  While it probably wont solve your dogs issues alone, it doesnt hurt to try to have your dog "leave" rather than letting him feel that all the barking and ugly behavior caused the other dog to go away.  If your dog does go over threshold and reacts to a dog he sees, do your best to get him turned around so you are the one that walks away.
Addressing a behavior problem like on-leash reactivity is usually a matter of combining management and behavior modification.  The right mixture will keep your dog (and those he encounters) safe during the training process, and allows the behavior modification to be as effective as possible.  There are good techniques available to counter reactivity, and Brody is getting the full experience.  Hopefully hell continue to learn quickly, soaking up everything he needs to have him feel more comfortable around other dogs when he goes out for a walk.  His owners enjoy traveling in their RV with him, so its important for everyone.

Are there things that your dog reacts to, either on leash or off?  Other dogs, new people or children?  The evil dog-hunting vacuum cleaner?

Anxiety Dr Phil McBeagle

The doorways at the Dog Training/Foster Shack are not nearly
this scary looking. It seems this may be how Dr. Phil McBeagle
sees them.
Our newest foster boy, Dr. Phil McBeagle, seems to have some anxiety issues. I suspect that his fears are the result of some previous trauma.

Even your macho dog trainer friend would be apprehensive
of crossing this particular doorway!
The most concerning phobia that he seems to have involves interior doorways. He is really scared to cross doorways inside the shack. He does not seem to have as big of an issue going inside or outside the structure. In fact he is house trained and has not had any accidents since he got here.

He just appears to be terribly frightened of crossing doorways from one room to the next. Once he is in the room he is okay.

He also cowers if you try to pet him on the head. I suspect that this is also the result of past trauma, Perhaps someone hit him on the head in an attempt to discipline the poor little guy.

It thought it may be helpful to some of you if I write about this problem and how we are going to address it here at the shack.

It is very important that the dog not be forced into a situation that he fears. It will not help to try to force him through the doorway. In fact, in Dr. Phils case, it is almost impossible to force him short of physically carrying him through.

In Dr. Phils case, The Lovely Shane and I are using techniques that involve what us dog trainers, just to sound cool, sometimes call desensitization and rehabilitation. Basically, the objective is to help the dog to become less sensitive to what we call, the stimuli (doesnt that sound cool). In Dr. Phils case the stimuli is the interior doorways. This seems to be what stimulates his fearful behavior. So, our objective is to make him less sensitive to the stimuli or to the doorways. We do this by using a motivator that is desirable to him. In his case, and with most beagles, tasty treats make a very good motivator. So, we have to make him associate the treats and the praise that he gets from us with walking through the doorway. It is not as fast and easy as it sounds. There are certain techniques to learn and the timing is really important. But, with persistence and patience, this method can be very successful in addressing this type of anxiety.

We have already begun this technique and it is beginning to work a little. But, I can not stress enough, this is a slow process. We do not know what sort of trauma the little guy has been through. Nor do we know how long this phobia of doorways has been an issue for him. As with all dog training, patience and routine is essential.
Dr. Phil McBeagle (I still think that is a cool name)

For the critics of my approach, I will state that the treats are only used to give the dog an immediate motivation. The treats will not have to be used permanently. I think that eventually Dr. Phil will not show any outward signs of being afraid of doorways. It is not that he will be going through the doorway to get the treat, it is that he will associate the doorways with good things rather than traumatic things.

I have successfully used this sort of approach for various other anxiety problems in the past. This is the sort of approach that I would use for a dog who is afraid of the veterinarian or a dog who is afraid of the clippers a groomer uses.

It is difficult to state with precise accuracy how this approach, or any other approach for that matter, will work for a particular dog. Each dog, like each person, responds differently to a particular treatment or approach. What is effective for an individual dog may not necessarily be effective for another. However I am very optimistic that this approach will be very effective with Dr. Phil McBeagle!
Veterinarians are not evil aliens.... not sure
about lawyers though :)

If you have a dog that seems to have a phobia or anxiety, please do not give up! The intent of this post is to inform you that there is hope! Many people get frustrated and give up when dogs have anxiety issues. From our prospective, as humans, it can be very frustrating. This is particularly true if we do not understand the proper techniques. It is important that your dog does not sense your frustration. This is something that you can effectively address!

If you have a dog with anxiety issues, please contact me at anytime! I will be more than happy to help you develop and execute a training plan to address the issue. This is precisely why I am in this business!

Till next time

Happy Independence Day! What do I do when my buddy is scared of fireworks

The Lovely Shane, Cuddles the Corgi mix, Copper the Whopper Beagle, Cody the Little Beagle and wish you a happy and safe July 4th! The picture is from a laser light and fireworks show at the State Park in Stone Mountain, Georgia. If you have never seen one of these you should. This time of the year, I think they do them weekly.

Firecrackers and certain types of fireworks that makes noise is not legal for home use in Georgia. So, I am certain that none of my Atlanta area readers ever encounter loud fireworks in your neighborhoods :) . Many years ago, I lived in a sub-division in eastern Cobb County, Georgia. All fireworks were illegal at that time. It sounded like a war zone around my house on New Years eve and July 4th. I am certain this was from some local licensed fireworks show and not my neighbors with  contraband firecrackers and M-80s :).

At the time I lived in Cobb County, I had a very nervous Beagle named Boomer. Like most of my Beagle buddies over the years, Boomer was a rescue. He was abused as a young puppy and had many anxiety issues. He was very scared of the noise that accompanied these local fireworks shows.

There are desensitization techniques that can be utilized for dogs that are scared of fireworks or thunder. They basically involve exposing the dog to loud noises that mimic the fireworks like recordings of fireworks, etc. You do this in a very controlled way and begin to associate good things with the offensive noise. Desensitization takes a while and if you are consistent with it, it can be very effective. However, the occurrence of fireworks is so infrequent that avoidance may be a better technique.

This may sound like common sense and the obvious answer, but I always kept Boomer inside during these fireworks displays. I also tried to mask the sound by having music playing or the TV tuned to one of his favorite channels.

It is always important to remember that, to a very large extent, your little buddy takes cues from you. So, with that in mind, try not to react to the fireworks. Do not make a big deal about them or call him poor dog and pet him every time you hear a boom. Also, if he wants to hide under a table or something, or if he wants to sit next to you on the couch, do not discourage this behavior. If your buddy sees that you are not reacting, it will probably help in calming him as well.

It has been my experience over the years that my little buddies who were afraid of thunderstorms were also afraid of fireworks and gunfire. So, some of the same techniques may be effective. I make this point because with many dogs that have moderate anxiety, the Thundershirt product is very effective. It does not work with every dog but I had many customers when I worked at Petco who said the product made a huge difference in anxiety level. There are also pheromone based sprays that seem to be effective with some dogs that have moderate anxiety. As in the case of the Thundershirt, this does not seem to work with every dog.

In extreme cases of anxiety, in other words if the dog is so anxious that he is hurting himself or being very destructive, your veterinarian can advise you about potentially using anti-anxiety medication for situations that you know are anxiety provoking.

If you do not have a regular veterinarian or if you suspect your vet is an evil alien :) , I will be happy to assist you in finding one.... I hope my readers appreciate my attempt at humor and dont just find it strange :).

I think our newest pack member, little Cody, may have some issues with fireworks this year. I have noticed that he is anxious during thunder storms. He is not relaxed like in this picture. On the contrary, he follows me everywhere and loves to lean on me an sit as close to me as possible. I will let you know how he does with the fireworks (if we have any in my law-abiding neighborhood).

Seriously, If you need help with an anxious dog or if you have any dog training needs, dog related questions, etc. , please contact me at any time!

I hope that you all have a great July 4th! The Lovely Shane is helping to care for her grandfather while her parents take a little out of town trip. I plan to take care of our pack and
do some bathroom remodeling here at the Dog Trainer Shack. There is one other special activity in which I am going to participate: There is a radio contest this weekend called 13 Colonies. Amateur Radio Operators running special stations in all 13 original colonies are making contacts. If you contact all 13
of them you get a really cool certificate! I already have a start. Last night I contacted the New Hampshire station from the shack here. I was only operating at an output power of 5 watts. For those of you who are unfamiliar with radio, I probably would have used more power to yell out the window :) .

Well... Have a great 4th! Be careful.

Till Next Time
