Dont be Cruel

This poor dog is riding in the wrong end of the pick-up truck.  Although its a beautiful day out (yes, sunny and mild in Portland, Oregon!), dogs should never ride like this in the open back of a truck.  If a dog must be transported in the back, they should be in an airplane-style plastic crate that has been carefully secured to the bed of the truck.

You may notice from the photo that he is tied with a red and white leash.  In some cases that could be considered an acceptable manner of securing the dog, but the tie down needs to be very short and fixed to the middle of the truck bed, not one side or the other as is the case with this dog.  Tying a dog with a leash that is too long, or too close to the edge of the truck is actually more dangerous than leaving him loose.  If the dog were to jump or fall, he would come up short and could be dragged or repeatedly run over.  Not something for mans best friend!

In most states, including Oregon, transporting a dog this way is actually against the law, generally falling under animal cruelty statutes.  Unfortunately catching people for the offense is difficult, but it can be done.  Hopefully the owners of this handsome dog will come to their senses and let him ride where he should be - shotgun!

Puppy Class!

Its hard not to fall in love with those soft, brown eyes, or to coo at the tiny features of a new puppy.  Puppies melt our hearts.  They also bite our hands with their sharp little teeth, jump on our legs as we try to walk, and pee on the floor (oops!) instead of the yard.

But thats what puppy class is for.  That, and the critical puppy-to-puppy socialization that nothing else (not even playing at home with your other dogs) offers.  We have to protect these little ones who are still on their path to becoming fully-vaccinated adults, so romping off to the dog park is a big no-no (way too many chances for disease, and also a risk of an unfriendly dog doing some serious damage).

Puppy class allows growing dogs (ages 8 to 16 weeks) to learn lots of life skills.  It also gives their owners the opportunity to ask the burning "should he really be doing this?" and "am I handling that right?" questions.  We cover things that puppy parents may not have thought of, with the hope that every graduating puppy is well on his or her way towards becoming a well mannered adult.

Puppy class is a joy, one of the perks of being a dog trainer.  A client once asked me, towards the end of a rollicking play session where 6 adorable puppies were tumbling around on the floor, "you actually get paid to do this?!?"

Well, yes.  Its not as bad as, say, a leash walk through cold, sleety rain with a ninety-pound dog who wants to take a chunk out of my arm.  But it all comes with the territory.  And I take pride in knowing that my puppy classes are well run.  They are jam-packed with good information, covering all the necessary topics in a fun way.  The play sessions are kept to the right length so puppies dont get too crabby with each other and so we get in plenty of "work" too. Overall, they are a joy not just for the dog trainer, but for the puppies and their owners too.

Now, dont you want to sign up?!

Next Class: Saturday, July 28th at 4:00 PM
Location: Rose City Veterinary Hospital, Portland
Cost: $140 for the 5 week course
Requirements: Puppies must be enrolled and current on their vaccines (at least one DHPP/DAP and one bordatella two weeks before the first class).  Ages 8 to 16 weeks; no more than 8 puppies per class.

Effectively breaking up a dog fight

This is Clara. She was stabbed multiple times with a pocket knife
in an attempt to break up a dogfight. She ultimately died as a result of the injuries
The unbelievable thing is that this happened
during an adoption event at a PetSmart store in Newnan, GA

Recently,  a tragic event occurred at the Petsmart store in Newnan, GA. There has been controversy regarding the particulars of this incident and my intent with this post is not to take sides. I do not have enough information to make any judgments regarding fault in this incident.

However, I can say that the knife play was not necessary. I have worked with dogs for many years. I have broken up  fights during that time. However, I have never cut a dog with a knife (or any other instrument for that matter). In fact, the thought would have never crossed my mind!

As I mentioned in a previous post, I have also never fired a gun at a dog in an attempt to break up a fight. A security guard used by Petco actually shot a dog multiple times inside a Petco store to break up a dog fight. This incident occurred a little over a year ago in Austin, Texas.

There is a correct way and many incorrect ways to break up a dog fight. I urge you as a pet parent, to please, please, please learn the correct way to avoid a dog fight and the correct method to break up a fight if a fight does occur.

The best tactic is prevention and common sense. In public, always keep your dog on leash! If your dog is aggressive, I recommend against taking him to unfamiliar surroundings such as a pet store on a weekend (when adoption events are taking place).

If your dog is not good on leash, I recommend strongly against taking him to a public place until he is trained well on the leash.

Even if your dog is not aggressive, please observe the three foot rule. Maintain a minimum of three feet of separation between your dog and other dogs. I maintain more than three feet between my dog and a dog with which I am unfamiliar. When you follow this rule, the dogs do not get close enough to fight.

Please, please, please learn the proper techniques to break up a dog fight. For more information see my previous post on the subject here: http://fayettedogtrainer.blogspot.com/2013/07/what-should-i-do-if-dog-fight-starts.html .

If you need help teaching your dog to behave properly on leash please contact me. Also, please contact me if you have questions about the proper technique to use when breaking up a dog fight.

Till next time -

Happy Dog Gone Easter

The Easter bunny was good to us this year. And, after all the fun inside, we took the dogs out to the front yard to find what the Easter bunny had left for them. All across the lawn were brightly colored plastic eggs filled with dog treats. Ethan couldnt resist the fun and helped the dogs find and open the eggs. Happy Easter!

Dog Training Care

Useful Tips
If you have a puppy that pees on your carpet. After soaking up most of the mess with paper towel, sprinkle a generous amount of bicarbontae of soda (baking soda) over the area and leave it to absorb both the traces of urine and the odor.

Do not leave your dog unattended on a choke chain. The chain could get caught and strangle the dog.

To keep your dog busy, buy toys with little holes in them (such as a Kong), put both big and small pieces of kibble in the toy and give it to your dog. This will keep him busy for quite awhile presuming he has a few small ones that he gets out quickly. You can also wedge dog biscuits in the holes with a smear of peanut butter.

When your dog is teething, instead of have him chewing on couches, walls etc. Buy a few (cheap) wash clothes. Soak the wash cloth and put it ion the freezer. When fully frozen give it to the dog to chew, it will thaw out so have another one ready in the freezer. (be careful when doing this with very small dogs, as they may get a chill. I have heard of small dogs getting too cold too quickly when chewing on ice.)

If your dog runs away from you and you finally catch up to it, no matter how angry you are at the dog, do not yell or smack it or your dog will never come to you when called for fear of being punished.

To Raw or Not to Raw

Proper nutrition is essential to a happy, healthy pet.  But how do we provide the best nutrition possible?  There is still debate on that - likely there always will be.  While some things are fairly certain (grocery brands are usually inferior quality, corn is bad, red dye is bad, etc.), the benefit from feeding a raw diet is still unclear.

Raw food is just what it sounds like - feeding your dog a mixture of raw meats, bones, eggs, vegetables and other ingredients that amount to a nutritionally sound meal.  Feeding raw diets used to be a cumbersome, expensive and even gruesome process as the dog owner had to buy ingredients and chop, grind and blend them into something their dog could eat.  It was an easy excuse not to feed a raw diet!

Today raw food is available in many pet stores and can be purchased in pre-packaged easy-to-feed nuggets or patties.  All you need to do is thaw a few days worth of food in your fridge, then dole it out at meal time.  Your dog gets a nutritious (and well enjoyed!) dinner.

But what about the expense, and what if you are traveling or just cant prepare a raw meal one night?  Although raw food has come down in price, it is still an expensive option.  However, raw food is highly digestible (as compared to some of that nasty grocery store food that is mostly cheap filler ingredients like corn - not that Im biased or anything).  And the more food your dog digests, the less of your money gets, well, pooped out in the back yard!

One way to bring down the price is to feed a mixture of raw and kibble.  Thats what I do, for many reasons, including expense and convenience.  For example, Apple eats 2/3 a cup of dry kibble mixed with two nuggets of Primal Canine Chicken Formula (you guessed it, raw is also available for kitties!).  It doesnt cost me as much as feeding exclusively raw, and if theres a night where I just cant manage to feed raw, she can eat kibble without any issues.  And Apple loves her meals - theres never a scrap left behind!

Dog Training Everything You Need to Know!

Numerous individuals believe that dog training is hard. The truth of the matter is this: all pet dogs are trainable, and practicing a canine does not have to be difficult work. What we venture to explore then, are some of the things you need to do, in order to get the training of your dog.
dog training

Specifications for evaluating success

If you handle to pass on the crucial pet dog abilities to your pooch within a sensible quantity of time, youll be considered to have actually gotten the training of your pet dog right.

If you manage to the important dog abilities in an enduring way, youll further be considered to have gotten the training of your dog right. This is to say, simply puts, that you wont be regarded as having actually been really effective in training your dog if the pooch forgets the skills instructed within a day.

Hence, in a nutshell, the parameters through which success in dog training can be assessed include:.

- The duration of time expended in passing on the crucial abilities to the pet dog.

- The abilities instilled in the dog.

- Exactly how long the abilities are kept by the pet dog.

Of course, if you are taking too long to pass on specific skills to the dog, if you are finding it impossible to inculcate particular skills in the dog, or if the dog keeps on forgetting skills instructed to him or her, it does not necessarily mean that you arent doing things well. And the second of those is your pet dogs natural capability - versus a background where some pet dog breeds seem to get things faster than others.

Early initiation as a secret to success in the training dogs.

Simply put, there are some skills that you can only instruct to a canine when he or she is young. It is worth keeping in mind that unlike us human beings, pet dogs are (in some means) extremely progressed animals - whose life skills learning procedure begins the moment they are born.

Now the finest time to start training a canine would be when he or she is learning basic life abilities, so that the skills you desire to pass on to him or her are also adopted together with those basic canine life skills. That means, the needed behaviors would be part of the pet dogs character.

It later emerges that a few of the people who wind up getting the impression that their pet dogs are not trainable have the tendency to be folks who make an attempt at instructing their dogs certain abilities too late in the dogs lives. When the dogs fail to pick such abilities, they are labeled boneheads - whereas it is not truly their fault that they are incapable to select the abilities, but rather, the fitness instructors fault for not having actually initiated training earlier.

The right use of rewards and corrections as a key to success in training dogs.

When we get to the nitty-gritty of dog training, it emerges that various skills and behaviors can just be sent and ingrained in canines through the right use of rewards and corrections.

The most significant reward you can provide a pet dog is attention. And alternatively, the most significant correction/punishment you can offer to a canine is deprivation of attention.

Hence, if you want to get you pet dog to select a specific behavior, you need to imitate (or rather show) it to him or her, and then reward them (with focus) when he acts accordingly, whist likewise punishing them (with deprival of focus) when or she fails to behave accordingly. Just looking at the dog lovingly is a method of satisfying them with focus. Cuddling them is another form of focus benefit. Applauding the pooch verbally is yet another way of rewarding them with attention. Real, the canine might not understand the words, but she or he can pick up the feelings behind them. Pet dog appear to have that capability.

If your pet dog was enjoying your focus whilst doing something right and you deprive him or her of that attention the moment he or she begins doing something incorrect, he instantly senses the reaction and makes the connection between his wrongdoing and the starvation of focus. He is inclined to remedy the habits, in order to regain your attention. If the canine you are attempting to train is still young, these things work particularly well.

Exactly what you should not do, nevertheless, is to strike the pet dog as a type of punishment/correction: the easy reason being that the pet dog wont understand that being hit is a type of punishment. Rather, the hit pooch will assume that you are simply being violent to him or her. If the pet dog keeps on doing things like running to the road or messing up next-door neighbors things, you d be better recommended to find methods of limiting his movements, as opposed to striking him.

Patience as a secret to success in the training of dogs.

You will not succeed in dog training unless you are patient. You need to keep it in mind that it takes pet dogs a long time to select ideas that appear too easy to us as human beings. There are individuals who have this misconception that you can just succeed in dog training if you are hard. On the contrary, this is among those undertakings where kindness and the soft technique appear to work much better than the challenging Spartan approach to training.

Determination as a key to success in the training of dogs.

Carefully connected to perseverance (as a key to success in dog training) is persistence. You wont succeed as a dog fitness instructor if you quit too quickly - that is, like where you illustrate a preferred habits to a pet dog, then give up if the pet dog fails to choose it up immediately. The truth of the matter is that you have to illustrate a desire habits to a canine a number of times, whilst utilizing the essential reinforcements, till the canine ultimately comes to learn what is anticipated of him or her.

dog obedience training

Consistency as a secret to success in the training of canines.

This is a scheme where, for instance, having actually picked a certain reinforcement (benefit or penalty), you need to apply it regularly, so that the pet dog under training can comprehend what it actually suggests. Among the worst things you can do in the course of training a dog is to send mixed signals, because as soon as a pet dog gets puzzled, it becomes extremely tough to train them.

Welcome Foster Boy Charlie the Beagle!

The Lovely and Awesome Shane with our newest arrival,
Charlie the Little Beagle.

The Lovely and Awesome Shane, Cuddles the Corgi Mix, Copper the Whopper Beagle, Cody the Little Beagle, Trigger the Dapple Dachshund, Foster Boy Dr. Phil McBeagle, Foster Boy Sammy the Beagle, and I  are pleased to welcome our newest foster member, Charlie the Little Beagle to our pack!

I drove the Awesome Mobile (Shanes Car) to Animal Medical Clinic in Peachtree City, Georgia to pick up this little guy today. He has been in our pack for about four hours.
The Awesome Mobile parked outside the shack
during a recent snow storm.

Charlie is a senior guy (I am unsure of his exact age). He looks a lot like Cody the Little Beagle. Cody says Charlie is very handsome :) .

Charlie is recovering from pneumonia. We will have him on antibiotics for a little longer. He seems to feel pretty good and has a great appetite! He has a growth in one of his ears that needs to be taken care of after he recovers completely from the pneumonia.

After he has fully recovered, he will be available for adoption! If you are interested in adding a handsome senior beagle boy to your pack, please contact me for more information on little Charlie!

Dr. Phil McBeagle in the Dog Training office with
a few of his pack mates in the background ( Cody ,
Copper, and Trigger)
Dr. Phil McBeagle is still available for adoption. His anxiety is much better! He is acting like a typical beagle now :) . He is fully housebroken. His training is coming along very nicely! Copper and I have been working with him. He knows sit, down, stay and leave it. He is beginning to learn the wait command (handy for proper behavior at doorways). He is also getting much better at loose leash walking! Dr. Phil is a very sweet and loyal beagle. He is going to be a very good addition to some lucky persons pack! If you are interested in Dr. Phil, please contact me!

Sammy relaxing in Codys Basket Bed
Sammy is also making great progress! He is still on antibiotics. He is eating very well! We expect him to start gaining back his weight very soon! His anxiety is getting better. He is slowly learning that not all people will hurt him. Copper has sort of become his mentor. Copper follows him around and takes care of him. It is really neat to watch! Trigger is his playmate. They love to run and play together! As soon as he finishes the antibiotics and gets a little more weight on him, we will take him to the veterinarian to be neutered, micro chipped, heart worm tested and get his rabies vaccine. At that point he will be available for immediate adoption. We expect that to take two or three weeks. If you are interested in adding Sammy to your pack, please contact me!

Charley being visited by Sammy. Charley will be spending most
of his time in the crate until he is fully recovered.
Folks, if you are looking for a new addition to your pack, please, please, please consider adoption! There are so many of these little guys and girls who desperately want and need a forever home! We have three beautiful beagles here at the shack that really need love and attention. We love our foster guys/girls but our ultimate goal is to find them a forever home so that we can save the lives of more dogs. This is truly a life or death issue for these dogs. Were it not for volunteers at rescue groups, many of these guys/girls would be killed in shelters. Unfortunately, that is not at all an exaggeration. I wish it were not true..... but it is true.

If you have a little guy or girl with anxiety issues, as is unfortunately very common in rescue/adopted dogs, Copper and I are happy to assist you! Also if you need help getting your little guy or girl to be a polite dog, please contact me! I always tell you: "Polite Dogs = Happy People". Let me help you get happy today!

How to help a dog that is afraid of nail clipping

Our little Beagle, Cody really does not like to have his nails clipped. He is a senior guy and his nails are thick and they seem to grow fast.

The Lovely Shane and I adopted Cody in June. Since then, we have noticed that he is really anxious in certain situations. He does not like getting shots at the veterinarian. I cant say that I blame him, I am afraid of needles too! However, Cody yelps like he is in extreme pain before the needle ever touches him. (I have stopped yelping when the doctor pulls out the needle... now I close my eyes)
He only has to see the needle to become anxious. I suppose he is associating the needle with the pain of the stick ( not an irrational thing to do at all in my opinion).

Cody in his basket.
He is also afraid of the nail clippers. I speculate that perhaps at some point in his life, someone accidentally cut into the quick and hurt him. Of course now, I speculate, that he is associating the pain he once experienced with the nail clipper. We could use one of those dremel tool type devices that grinds the nail but I doubt he would be thrilled about that either.

The problem, in my opinion (based upon experience with other dogs), is that he is associating people doing things to his nails with some painful earlier experience. Much like people, some dogs are just naturally more anxious than others. Cody is generally slightly more high strung than our Whopper Beagle, Copper. Copper generally does not get nearly as anxious as Cody.

There is a reason I am writing about Codys anxiety here. There is a technique for addressing this problem. I have had a lot of success with it in the past. Dog Trainers call this technique Counter Conditioning and Desensitization. Sometimes, just so we can sound cool, we abbreviate it CC&D.

Cody and I ready for a little nap.
It is outside the scope of this blog post to teach you all the details of this method. However, the way I usually explain it to people is as follows:

As I mentioned, the real issue here seems to be that the dog is associating pain or something negative with the nail clippers. Simply put, our objective is to get the dog to associate something positive with the dreaded nail clippers rather than something negative.

It is important that you remain patient during this process. It will not happen immediately. It takes slow, methodical steps. Like virtually everything else in dog training, patience and routine are really the keys to success here. It is very important that you not get frustrated.

What we do is find something that the dog loves. It should be something that motivates him. Something that is of "high value" to the dog. For some dogs this may be a food item like a frankfurter (we do not say hot dog :) ) or cheese. For some dogs this may be a favorite toy.

Me when I learn the Doctor is going to need
to use a needle.
Once we have identified the motivation, we very slowly, in a controlled environment begin to get the dog to associate the motivator with the nail clippers. In other words, we are desensitizing him (making him less sensitive) to the nail clippers by associating the nail clippers with the motivator (maybe a nice piece of stinky cheese). This helps to "counter-condition" him from associating the clippers with pain and he begins associating the clippers with fun good stuff.

I know this sounds like a lot of psychological theory. I am not a psychology professor (however I do occasionally play one on T.V. :) ) I do however know what my experience has been .It does really work. I have seen it work many times. In the beginning, I was skeptical of this technique. I am a reformed believer now!

The Lovely Shane and I are going to begin this with Cody very soon. I will keep you updated on our progress.

If you have a dog that is afraid of the nail clippers or anything similar, this is a technique that we can use to help your little guy or girl. There is hope! It just takes the proper technique, time, and patience.

Please contact me and I will be glad to help you help your dog to deal with his/her anxiety.

Till Next Time

Dog Training

Best Dog Training Practices

Dog training is best started early in your dogs adolescence. While the old adage "You cant teach an old dog new tricks" is false, what you teach earliest is often learned easiest. Remember this old adage instead: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". Breaks bad habits early!

Dog training should be delivered in a gentle manor whenever possible. Dog training sessions should be upbeat and should rely on postivie motivational method so it is enjoyable for both you and your dog. If you find dog training a chore, dont be affraid to pep things up by taking a playful approach by using games such as "Find the Stick" and retrieving.

Keep consistent with your dogs behavior and discipline both at home and in public. If your dog doesnt positively respond to you at home then he certainly wont respond when he is outdoors and tempted by the distractions of his surroundings.

Also, as part of your dog training, be sure to give your dog commands you know you will enforce. If you give a command and it is not adhered to, the dog begins to feel that commands are optional. To make it easier, one command should equal one response. For instance, if you say to your dog "down, down, down", this teaches him that the first several commands are simply a bluff. Say it once and then coax him down to that position. And dont give him combined commands which are inconsistent like "sit-down". This will only confuse him.

Whether you’re in the heat of dog training or out in a public setting, have patience and keep your anger in check. It is less likely to earn your dogs respect if you are yelling, hitting or treating your dog in a rough manner. This added stress on the dog also may inhibit the learning process.

What sort of harness or collar is good for a dog who pulls on the leash

Dogs that pull on the leash is the second most common thing that people ask me about. Second only to housebreaking. If you have a dog that pulls on the leash there are loose leash walking techniques that you can learn. I will be happy to teach you how to train your dog to walk properly on a leash using these techniques.

For a dog that is really bad about pulling, in addition to the loose leash walking techniques, I also suggest a no-pull harness.

There is a difference between a no-pull designed harness and a traditional flat harness.

The green and black and the orange and black harnesses pictured above are both flat harnesses. The orange and black one is a mesh comfort harness. Both of these are good for their intended purpose which is to distribute the pull from the leash across the body rather than at one point on the neck ( as with a flat collar). They do prevent choking. However they offer no resistance to pulling. They actually tend to encourage pulling because the dog gets no resistance.

There are a couple of options that I recommend for no-pull harnesses:
The Petsafe Easy Walk is a very good solution. The handsome Labrador in the picture is sporting an Easy Walk harness. It has a D-ring in the front of the collar. The d-ring in the  front is attached to a buckle that pulls the two nylon pieces in the front tighter when the dog pulls, thus giving the dog resistance. When adjusted properly, the harness does not really squeeze the dog it simply gives him resistance. The Easy Walk is the harness that I used to teach Copper proper loose leash walking technique. It is a really good product however, my experience has been that it does not fit all dogs properly. The other caution I will give you for this harness and pretty much any no-pull type harness is that they are only for walking. After the walk they need to come off because the dog can easily chew them up. Copper chewed up two of the Easy Walks because I neglected to remove them after walking.

The Beagle in the picture is wearing a typical no-pull harness that is available in many different brands at your local pet stores. It has a little bit of mesh in the front but it is different than the mesh flat harness. Notice the padded strings that attach to the mesh and go behind the little beagle guys front legs. These strings are attached to the d-ring to which the leash is attached. When the dog pulls, he feels resistance on the strings. When adjusted properly, this does not hurt him, he simply feels resistance. This is the type of harness that I am using now to train Cody, our newest addition to the pack. This harness is generally about half the price of the Easy Walk and seems to fit a wider range of dogs. The Easy Walk is a little easier to get on and off the dog, however.  I will give you the caution again that this harness needs to come off  the dog after a walk. They will chew this one too!
The brown collar here is a martingale collar. These are very popular with people who own sight hounds (or greyhounds). The reason they are popular is that they do not easily pull over the head. This is important with the sight hounds because typically the neck is wider than the head. After your dog stops pulling as much, you may want to transition him to a collar for walking. The martingale is a good choice. When adjusted properly, the martingale fits snug when the leash is pulled but does not choke the dog. I have a martingale on Copper. I have the leash connected directly to the martingale most of the time when we walk. It took a while to make the transition.

These are the products that I have used in training many times and I know that they work. There is a new product that I have heard nothing but good things about from people I respect. That product is the Walk-in-Sync harness. It is a little more expensive but seems to have the advantages of the Easy Walk while fitting a wider variety of dogs. If you are interested you can find more information at http://dogwalkinsync.com/ . At some point later on, I will test this product and post the results on this blog. The black lab in the picture is wearing a Walk-in-sync.
If you have a dog that pulls on the leash and/or is not well behaved on walks, please contact me at any time. I will be happy to help you!

Become best pals

Properly training your dog will allow you to coexist with ease and become best pals. When your dog is well-trained, then both you and your dog will know exactly what is expected from each other. You will not have to worry about leaving him home along or taking him to public places. Though it might seem like a difficult task, you and your dog will have many rewarding times together, sharing the tricks and companionship that youve come to know through the dog training sessions.

To have success in dog training, you need to be able to control it with commands. Put yourself in an authoritative position, so that your dog knows to obey you. For example, when you walk your dog you must be in front and you should insist your dog follows behind you.

Challenge your dog often. Provide your dog with fun ways to "quiz" it in order to ensure that it hasnt lost past training.

Always keep the atmosphere positive and motivational when conducting a training session with your dog. If your dog performs a task you ask him to, reward him. Negative reinforcement will only confuse your dog early in its training and is likely to make your dog afraid of you.

Make sure your dog feels safe to train them properly. If a dog feels unsafe, they are likely to show bad behavior. To prevent this from happening, always make sure your dog is in a comfortable, safe area.

Accidents are bound to happen while housebreaking your puppy. Clean accidents right away to speed up training. Animals are inclined to eliminate repeatedly in spots where they can smell urine or feces, and carpets require special care. There are many products on the market that can help with this, so check with your local pet shop.

You do not want to use wee-wee pads when potty training your dog. The pads eventually leak; leaked waste marks certain areas in the house as "potty areas". Wee-wee pads can also train your dog to think that other items that are the same shape are a potty area as well. The best way to housebreak a dog is not to allow them to use the bathroom in the house; there is really no alternative.

Teach your pet the proper way to walk on a leash. When they walk properly, it makes both of you safer when you both go walking.

Destructive chewing is often a result of anxiety. Putting your dog in his crate with a chew toy will reduce the chance of destructive events and give him something to do while he waits for you.

If you lack patience or cannon remain even-tempered during the training session, do not push forward. If you cannot focus on remaining patient when training your dog, it will quickly lose interest in what you are trying to teach.

Try to teach your dog good habits right away. It is far simpler to teach a dog to do something the right way than to break bad habits. If you never give your dog any scraps from table food, they will never start begging for it.

Consistency is very important when training your dog. Have a set list of commands that everyone in the household knows. Also, make sure to be on the same page regarding rewarding good behavior and never rewarding bad behavior. Different training methods will only confuse your dog and delay training.

Never try to train a dog while youre short on patience. If youve had a bad day or are unusually short-tempered for some other reason today, its better to put off training until another day. Your patience is vital for encouraging the focused attention your dog needs to get the full benefits of training.

Dogs learn well through a reward system that incorportates repetitive techniques. Repetition and reward are the best ways to train a dog. However, you should limit your training sessions to a certain time frame otherwise you may both become frustrated. Your dog will then correctly learn the way to do a trick. Dogs learn through repetition and reinforcement.

Be consistent with your cues when training a dog. Your dog can learn to associate a command with a particular behavior, but if you keep changing the command associated with a behavior, youll confuse him and he wont do what you want him to do. It is absolutely critical to remain consistent throughout. If you strive for this, you and your pet will get more out of the training.

Make sure training has an element of fun incorporated into it. Taking time to play creates a strong bond between the two of you, and your dog will be more likely to respond well to training. Training is fun for the dog, but you should set aside some real "play time" as well.

Do not tie more than one dog in the same area. It is possible for the chains to become intertwined, and the animals can be hurt as they try to get free. If a large dog becomes tangled with a smaller one they could wrap up to the point the airway of the latter is closed off and the dog would die.

You should not initiate a training session unless you are in a calm and patient mood. Be patient when training your puppy, so you can both stay focused.

When training a dog it should always be done in a positive, motivated environment. Remember to reward desired behavior achieved by your dog while training, especially in response to specific requests. Using training techniques that are negative and based upon punishments will likely make your dog afraid, disobedient, and unhappy.

You can prevent your dog from destroying your home by keeping it outdoors when you are away from the house. When this isnt possible, you want to provide things that both appeal to your dog and that are okay for the dog to chew on. Establishing acceptable chews toys is also about keeping those things you do not want your dog to chew up behind closed doors or well out out of reach.

Now that you have received the helpful advice in this article, you should now be aware how easy it is to train your dog. With patience and a little research, you can train your dog. The right training can help every dog thrive and be well behaved..

Microchip 101 Should I Microchip My Buddy

A microchip is a very good safeguard in case your dog is ever lost. The microchip is actually a passive RF device. For those of you that are not former engineers, what this means is it is effectively a tiny radio transmitter. The microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and is injected under the dogs skin. This is done  on the back of the dogs neck. A hand-held scanning device is used to activate the radio transmitter. When activated, the transmitter sends identification information to the hand-held scanner. The scanner has to be very close to the dogs neck when this is done. Most animal shelters and veterinarian offices have these handheld scanning devices. Once the dog is scanned the information on the microchip is used to look up information on the dogs owner. Information like your name and telephone number.

The microchip is not really a replacement for a collar id tag. An ID Tag is actually human readable and the microchip has to be read by a scanner. The obvious advantage is that the microchip will not fall off the dog.  The microchip itself is actually very affordable. Copper and Cody both have microchips the cost of the microchips was included in their adoption fee.

The microchip is useless however, if the registration information is not updated. The microchips that Copper and Cody have are both from Home Again. We have them registered nationally with Petkey. It was about $45 for lifetime registration.

The microchip is a really useful device but it is not a GPS or LoJack device. It can not locate your dog. The dog has to be found and taken to a location that has a scanner (i..e a veterinarian or a shelter). It is a very good tool but it is not a fool-proof way to get your dog back. You must keep the registration information up to date (accurate phone number, etc.).

The engineering of the microchip is pretty cool. It is designed to have a lifetime of about 25 years. While it may move around slightly after implantation, it will not get lost in the dog. Aside from the needle stick, the implantation is pretty much painless.

In my opinion, the microchip is very much worth the cost.

When it comes to my little guys pictured on the left, I think it is well worth the cost for the peace of mind.  But, I also have ID tags for them.

If your dogs do not have microchips, I strongly encourage you to talk to your veterinarian about this soon! Particularly if the dogs are scent hounds. As I have said many times before, the scent hound breeds (i.e. Beagle, Basset, Bloodhound, etc.) really love to follow a trail and can get away from you easily while on the trail.

I also think it is pretty cool that when discussing  the technology of microchips two of my favorite things Ham Radio and Dogs sort of overlap. I am a recovering engineer, ya know :) If any of you are also Techies, Nerds or recovering engineers like me, there is some really interesting technical information about how these chips work at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microchip_implant_(animal).

If you have any questions about identification for your dog or if you have any training questions or issues, please contact me at any time.

Identification Tags for your dog

I always suggest identification tags for your dogs. Even if you have a microchip,  an identification tag is a good idea. Since it is readable by a human, if the collar stays on the dog, it is a great way for someone to identify your lost dog and get him home again!

When I adopted Copper , I also worked at Petco in Peachtree City, GA. I used the fancy new tag machine to make him a really nice military style id tag. The retail cost of it was $11.00. My employee discount brought it down to about $9.00 plus tax.

I give you these prices because when we adopted cute little Cody the Beagle earlier this week, The Lovely Shane and I went to our local Wal-Mart. They have a machine that is very similar to the fancy one we had at Petco. However the identical tag only cost me $5.00 tax included.  The only difference is that the machine at Petco allows engraving on both sides of the tag and the one at Wal-Mart only allows one side engraving. This was not a big deal for us because there was plenty of room for the following to be very visible:

Cody the Beagle
678-702-4791
Im microchipped

The tag has the dogs name, my phone number and indicates that he is microchipped. This way in the unlikely event that my phone number is incorrect or for some reason does not work, the microchip will provide my name, address, correct phone number, etc.

If you can wait for shipping, there are even better Internet deals to available.

Our entire pack (Cuddles the Corgi Mix, Copper the Beagle, and Cody the Beagle) all now have identification tags on their collars. This gives the Lovely Shane and I a little more peace of mind.

I encourage you to get your little guys and/or girls identification tags if you do not already have them.

As always, please feel free to contact me at any time with dog training or general dog related questions.

Make Training Sessions Entertaining For Your Puppy And You Also

You just got a whole new dog and want to get yourself started on coaching him, as youthful as possible. This is very important to perform at the start of your dogs life, in order to shape his persona and responsiveness. In this post, we will provide you with the finest guidelines for education your dog quickly and properly.

Much like nearly anything, fortify the best actions from the puppy. Ensure that you have treats convenient, or perhaps use lots of praise for steps that happen to be excellent. This can instruct your pet to try to have a deal with, or your praise and strengthen directly to them that the things they just do was some thing you would like them to hold undertaking.

While you begin the canine education method, make sure you compensate your furry friend once they execute desired behaviours. Despite the fact that willpower is needed at times, the more it is possible to praise your pet, the better your romantic relationship will probably be. A good relationship means that your dog would want to stick to your directions and also the instruction process will be easier.

Always be form and individual along with your puppy. Know that coaching canines may be aggravating given that some dogs have got a tougher time learning obedience than the others. Usually do not get rid of your temper and avoid the impulse to scream or shout at the canine. Also, never ever success your puppy as this will simply help to mistake it and will can make training harder.

Puppies are critters of habit. In the event you customarily bring them out for his or her go walking simultaneously every night, they are going to expand should be expected that move, even to depend on it. Missing out on the timetabled day by even just a couple a few minutes can result in any sort of accident for that youthful dog as well as for the older one particular.

When coaching, be certain about what you wish your pet to do. Using obscure directions like "no" are generally inadequate. No only tells him that you just didnt like what he performed, however, not why. When you say "no" as he leaps around the sofa, he may consider you desired him to jump greater. Use specific instructions like keep and sit for far better outcomes.

Persistence is essential when working on crate education having a young canine. Shortly after you let your puppy to get out of the kennel, he needs to be given a chance to relieve him self inside the chosen area. At some point, the pet will be taught to hold back to pee till considering the chance.

Strengthen attractive actions from your dog. Dont just depend upon goodies however. You are able to fortify these behaviors by way of positive focus too. Petting your pet dog and speaking to him in cheerful colors could be a good bonus too. So can a whole new squeaky stuffed toy or a visit to the playground.

Make an effort to plan each training session at approximately the same time frame daily. You would like your pet to gain access to a style exactly where he knows its coming and it is fired up for doing it. Should your pet is excited for it hes much more likely to succeed, just as if human beings are thrilled for some thing theyre very likely to become successful.

Actual penalties does not function, and can prevent instruction. By no means ever success your puppy, particularly when education. Even though it may look to function since the pet halts the behaviour, in fact they already have only figured out to concern you and not accomplish that habits inside your appearance. So toss out that rolled up paper and bust out some yummy pleasures rather.

When education a difficult puppy there are many different techniques that one can use. Even so a vital element is establishing that you is dominant across the pet they are attempting to train. By making sure that the canine understands that is in charge it will guarantee that the canine is hearing anyone seeking to workout it.

The kind of leash, collar, and harness are very important to consider when coaching your dog. The bigger the dog the more protect these things should be. Also if a person has a dog that draws in the leash a utilize ought to be employed to manage your pet against a choke chain or collar. The proper gear is essential to proper dog training.

As being a assertive pet owner is the first step in instruction your pooch. An owner who anticipates difficult conditions with regard to their dog, and works to always keep him far from these situations anytime you can, will have a better behaved animal. Considerable instruction is definitely not as essential if you get to understand your dog so you can expect his measures.

Only give directions you happen to be willing to follow-through with, or perhaps the puppy will be taught that it is all right to disregard you. Should you give the order to sit down, your dog need to rest right away or you will impose the demand having a finger pressing down on the lower back. In no way give a command and enable your pet to pick whether to obey you or perhaps not except if you wish to allow the puppy function as the one in fee.

When youre training your pet dog it is critical that you simply never ever misuse your puppy. Abusing your pet in form of penalties will just bring about your puppy fearing you. A basic "no" is far more powerful. You really have to be consistent, and affected person.

To conclude, education your pup requires that you take a completely distinct approach than education an older pet. Luckily, you might be beginning after it is least complicated to do this. Provided that you adhere to the recommendations offered, you will be able to workout your pet dog efficiently and type a great connection involving the both of you.

Meet the breed Border Collie

The Border Collie is a herding breed. They are really energetic, fun little guys and girls!

Adult male height tends to be about 20 inches. The females tend to be slightly shorter. Adult male healthy weight tends to be about 40 pounds and the females tend to be slightly lighter.

There are varieties with short coats and varieties with longer coats.

The colors are quite varied. I believe this is a complete color list:

  •  black and white
  • tricolor
  • red and white
  • black and gray
  •  yellow
  •  yellow and white
  •  sable
  • all black

In my experience, this breed generally seems to be very eager to learn. They are extremely high energy dogs. They really excel in agility. They usually really love playing fetch with a ball, Frisbee, stick, etc.

Ironically, for such a high energy breed, I have found that many of these guys are sort of shy and timid. This is mostly true of puppies. Proper socialization is very important at an early age.

As with most of the herding dogs, it is important to begin training as early as you can

Because of their instinctual herding nature, you have to sometimes stop unwanted herding behavior early. Many of these guys tend to nip at your heels when you are playing and they sometimes try to herd people as they would livestock. This behavior can be successfully addressed, but it is much easier to deal with it in puppy-hood than later in life.

I can not over stress that these guys/girls need a lot of mental and physical exercise. I mean several hours per day if possible. If you do not have that sort of time to put into a dog, the Border Collie is probably not a good fit for your pack.

Like most dogs, if the Border Collie does not get enough stimulation through exercise, he can become pretty destructive around the house. Many people get frustrated with Border Collies for this issue. Quite a few of these guys end up at shelters because their people simply did not take the time to work with them. These dogs, like all high energy breeds, need to work!

It is not nearly sufficient to simply walk these dogs a few minutes a day. They need more physical exercise and a lot of it should be interactive with the people. You can not just let these dogs loose in the back yard for a while and expect that to be sufficient mental and physical stimulation.

Please understand, I am not suggesting that the Border Collie does not need to walked on a leash. Quite the opposite is true! You should go for a brisk walk at least two or maybe three times a day with these guys in addition to the other exercise. The on-leash walking , in my opinion, reinforces the human/dog bond with these guys and for that reason I think it is essential!

These dogs are really cool because generally, their main desire is to please their people. They really bond closely with people in general and the people in their home in particular.

The Border Collie also has a quite remarkable stamina. This is part of the reason they require so much work and exercise. I tell people that when training a dog, most dogs are only good for about 15 minutes at a time of working on commands and behaviors. Most dogs lose focus quickly after about 15 minutes and further work is frustrating and counterproductive. My experience has been that Border Collies however, in general, can work on training much longer than that without losing focus.

There are a few health problems to which the Border Collie is more susceptible than are other breeds. The following is a list of the one of which I am aware:

  • epilepsy
  • hip dysplasia
  • PRA (Collie Eye Anomaly)
  • deafness
  • allergies to fleas occurs more often in the Border Collie than in most other breeds.

The Border Collie can be crate trained. Although he must have interaction with people more often than most other breeds. I would not leave a Border Collie in a crate or any sort of confined space for extended periods of time. Much like our friend the Beagle, the Border Collie can be quite the escape artist!

An interesting bit of trivia about the ancestry of this remarkable breed: The Border Collie is rumored to have descended from dogs that the Vikings used to herd Reindeer. So, if you need a good Reindeer herder in your pack, this breed may be a perfect addition!

However, the Border Collie is probably not the best choice for apartment dwellers due to the amount of exercise that they require.

Because they are so eager to learn, they can make great service dogs!

If you want an energetic, eager and fun little guy in your pack, the Border Collie is very much worth considering. If you have the time to spend working with these guys they make very loyal, intelligent, and eager companions!

As always, please consider adoption when adding a new member to your pack! Also consider an adult or senior dog, these guys need forever homes too and they make great additions to your pack!

If you have questions about rescue groups in your area from which to adopt, please contact me. Also contact me with your general dog and dog training needs at any time!
